WHO SHOULD I SEE?
The members of the practice work as a team. When you book an
appointment, you will be asked to give us a brief idea of what the appointment is for to enable us to direct
you to the most appropriate member of our team. Here are some guidelines for you to use.
Health Care Assistants offer ear syringing, blood tests, suture removal, etc. They provide a
clinic for blood tests on a Wednesday morning from 7.00 to 10.30am.
Practice Nurses are available to provide repeat prescriptions for people on the contraceptive
pill or HRT, and give regular injections. They provide health checks and advice to minimise your risk of having
a heart attack or a stroke. You should also see a practice nurse for cervical smears, dressings,
immunisations and minor injuries.
Specialist Practice Nurses are members of the practice team with specialist training in
certain health areas. You will be asked to see the appropriate specialist nurse for ongoing management of
asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and to have your repeat prescriptions
updated. Specialist nurses are also available for family planning and stopping smoking.
Health Visitors work from offices at the practice and also in people’s homes. They are
concerned with health promotion and the prevention of illness, offering help, advice and support on many things
affecting the health of both children and adults. You should see a health visitor for advice on such
things as baby and child care, child health and development, minor ailments, family nutrition, family dynamics,
coping with disabilities, welfare benefits and local services and facilities. They also run support groups.
District Nurses work from offices in the practice, providing nursing care for patients in
their own homes and sometimes in the surgery. In addition to being skilled nurses, they know about the local
and national services available, and in particular they provide teaching and support for carers. You should
contact the district nurses if you need nursing care or a health check at home if you have recently been
discharged from hospital, or if you are a carer.
Midwives work from each surgery providing antenatal and postnatal care, support and education
to those who are pregnant. This includes antenatal clinics, drop-in clinics, parentcraft classes and home
visits.
Doctors are available for consultation at all three sites. Increasingly the management of
ongoing stable conditions is shared with the specialist practice nurses.
Physiotherapists are available through referral
by your GP.
Chaplaincy: The chaplain is available to talk you through the spiritual aspects of life and
health. She is also able to be alongside you when you suffer loss, face serious illness or just need someone to
listen.
Smoking Cessation Advisors are available to help
people who wish to stop smoking.
TEACHING AND TRAINING
We are a part of the Oxford Regional Scheme for training GPs and
supporting medical and nursing teaching. Sometimes one of our team may have a doctor or medical student or
student nurse with them during consultations.
When this happens we will always ask beforehand whether you are
comfortable with this, or whether you would prefer to see your doctor or nurse on their own. Occasionally a
video recording may be made of the consultation, but only with your written consent.
